First performed in Venice
in 1651, La Calisto is set in mythological times and recounts the
story of a young nymph, Callisto, who, resisting the blandishments of a
lusty Jupiter, is rewarded for her courage, chastity, and devotion to the
goddess Diana. It features mistaken identity, disguise, and sly double
entendres based on the characters’ cross-dressing.

One of the most important
opera composers of the late 17th Century, Cavalli (1602-1676), was based
in Venice and served as maestro di capella at St. Mark’s Cathedral. A prolific
man of the theatre, he produced at least 40 stage works. La Calisto
will be played in period style utilizing a performing version edited by
Raymond Leppard for a 1970 production at the Glyndebourne Festival.
Performed by an all-student
cast and orchestra, La Calisto will be directed by Marc Astafan
of the NEC faculty and conducted by Christopher Larkin. Former music director
of the New York City Opera National Company, Larkin previously held the
position of Associate Conductor with Houston Grand Opera where he led the
world premieres of Mark Adamo’s Little Women and Michael Daugherty’s
Jackie
O with the Houston Opera Studio. He conducted the East Coast premiere
of Tod Machover’s Resurrection staged by Boston Lyric Opera. |
