The Heisei Nakamura-za Kabuki
troupe, led by Kankuro, performs regularly in Tokyo and Osaka in a special
theater designed to re-create the atmosphere of the original Nakamura-za
theater built in Edo in the mid-17th century. For maximum authenticity
in the Boston performances, a hanamichi – runway through the audience on
which Kabuki actors make their entrances and exits – will be specially
built at the Cutler Majestic Theatre.

Bo-shibari (Tied
to a Pole) is the Kabuki adaptation of a classic Kyogen comedy in which
two servants outwit their lord and wreak havoc in his household.
This time, they manage to drink up the fine sake he thought he had
put out of reach of their unquenchable thirst. Adapted to the Kabuki
stage in 1916, this play has been a great favorite with audiences ever
since. Deceptively simple, it demands of its actors the greatest
versatility in dance and mime, as well as extraordinary acrobatic agility.
Renjishi (Dance for
Two Lions) is a variation on the celebrated Kabuki lion dance. Based
on the Noh play Shakkyo (Stone Bridge), it depicts a parent lion
training its young cub. In this presentation, Kankuro will
perform the parent lion and his son Shichinosuke will play the young lion.
The two lions playing energetically together is the brilliant climax of
this powerful Kabuki dance-drama.
