Intermission Tavern
This fabulous bar is right across the street from the Cutler Majestic.  It is owned by the Props Master of the Colonial Theatre, Michael Connors, and is the industry hangout.  They serve sandwiches, burgers, and various entrees, all in a theatrical-themed atmosphere where mementos of Boston's rich theatre scene speckle the walls.

Montien
On Stuart Street, to the left, this Thai/Sushi restaurant was voted Boston's Best for Thai Food.  Customers have said Montien has the most authentic Thai cuisine in the city, this coming from people who also lived in Thailand!  Our manager considers it the go-to lunch place for advertising meetings.

Jacob Wirth
On Stuart Street just past Montien, this is Boston's oldest restaurant and the only German restaurant downtown.  E. E. Cummings mentions it in “the enormous room” and frequented it as a Harvard student.  Today you will find tourists, theatergoers and locals alike enjoying the traditional German fare or more American dishes.  They brew their own beer and pour the best Guinness around.  Some nights you can catch a piano player leading a rousing sing along, but be warned, weekend nights are usually packed!

Chinatown
Boston's Chinatown is among the first in the US.  It's got a range of restaurants from vegetarian to the best seafood in town, New York style Chinese, and traditional Boston style Chinese (with Italian rolls and butter on the table.)  Emperor's Garden, across Washington Street from Penang, is noteworthy because it's an adaptive reuse of the Globe Theater (1870, burned and rebuilt 1873/4, replaced 1903.)  Around the corner on Beach Street just past Buddha's Delight is a proud vaudeville hotel that has outlived its art form.  You can find it by looking for the busts of DWEMs.  This area is the oldest part of commercial Boston, the dry isthmus connecting what was once a cape, now downtown Boston, with the mainland, now South Boston and Dorchester.  The south side of Stuart Street was a series of wharfs; Boston Children's Hospital at that location is called the Floating Hospital because, when it was founded in 1894, it was a ship.  So the area is rich in theatrical tradition, some hidden, some right on the surface.  It's what's left of the old town.

Buddha's Delight
On Beach Street, this vegetarian restaurant is about a block away from the Majestic. It specializes in foods that simulate the flavors and textures of meat, using bean curd, tofu and gluten.  Even non vegetarians find their dishes delicious and satisfying.  Go out on a limb and try this very healthy diet!
3 Beach Street
(617) 451-2395

Penang
This Malaysian restaurant is on Washington Street, a block away from the Majestic, and it has unique and wonderful dishes.  For the adventurous, try their Fish Head casseroles or Chicken Feet with Mushrooms.  For more familiar fare, their rice and noodle dishes are all good choices.  Wonderfully spicy or mild, filling or light - they are attentive and actually listen to your requests.
685 Washington Street

City Place
Around the right hand corner from the Majestic is City Place, a large complex with a fast food court along with several restaurants, including Rock Bottom Brewery, Tantric Bar & Grill, California Pizza Kitchen, Bennigan's, and PF Chang's.

A must for beer lovers, Rock Bottom Brewery serves their own brews that range from crisp lagers to hearty stouts.  The menu carries lots of favorites with something to please everyone.
115 Stuart Street
(617) 742-2739

Tantric Bar & Grill is a contemporary restaurant serving authentic Indian food.  During the summer, the outdoor seating hosts a Hookah Bar with a wide array of flavored tobacco.
123 Stuart Street

Not your average pizza, California Pizza Kitchen specializes in gourmet creations piled high with toppings.
137 Stuart Street

Bennigan's is a chain with a good family atmosphere.  If you want affordable casual dining, this is a good choice.
191 Stuart Street

For really authentic chinese food, Chinatown is the way to go.  But PF Chang’s has a great menu as well with a pleasant dining atmosphere.
8 Park Plaza
(617) 573-0821

Also of note is Cold Stone Creamery, a unique ice cream parlor.  Don't plan on getting plain chocolate on a cone – here they mix in ingredients of your choice and enhance the ice cream experience.  The Majestic staff goes there regularly, no matter how cold it is outside.
8 Park Plaza

Rustic Kitchen
This newly relocated restaurant, described as an Italian Mediterranean bistro, has unique decor and fantastic food.  Located just around the corner on Stuart Street, they boast hand crafted pasta and an extensive wine list.
200 Stuart Street
(617) 423-5700

Teatro
On Tremont Street about a block uphill from the Majestic is a relatively new addition to the District.  Assistant Theatre Manager Christina Harrington -- a restaurant maven -- recommends this as a pricey but attractive place.  Try the antipasto or chicken lasagna.
177 Tremont Street
(617) 778-6841

Parish Cafe
The Parish Cafe is located in the heart of Boston's Back Bay near the Public Gardens. The entire menu features sandwiches, appetizers, entrees and desserts inspired by some of Boston's best chefs. This menu changes seasonally, so there is always something new and exciting to try.
361 Boylston Street
(617) 247-4777

Motor Mart Garage
On Stuart Street, between the Park Plaza and Majestic, lies the 1927 historic landmark Motor Mart Garage.  There are three restaurants, Maggiano’s, Flemings, and Legal Sea Foods.

Though it's a chain, Maggiano’s is some of the best Italian food outside of the North End, and the portions are such that you can easily split an appetizer for a meal!
4 Columbus Avenue
(617) 542-3456

Meat eaters will find that Flemings has stellar steak and Texas’ Blue Bell ice cream.
217 Stuart Street
(617) 292-0808

Legal Sea Foods is an established chain, and if you've seen Crossing Jordan or other Boston based TV shows, you may be familiar.
26 Park Plaza
(617) 426-4444

Park Plaza Hotel
Finale is a classy desserterie, making the dishes as pretty as they are delicious.  Portions are small, but the food is so rich that you won't need more.  Try their Port sampler if you are interested in fine after dinner drinks, or just have a cup of coffee with your artistic dessert.
1 Columbus Avenue
(617) 423-3184

For more substantial fare, McCormick and Schmick’s is wonderful seafood, though a chain, not authentic Boston.  Their tilapia is always superb, and they have a tasty baby shrimp, artichoke and spinach dip.
34 Columbus Avenue
(617) 482-3999

MJ O’Connor’s is an Irish pub/restaurant.  If you want really great authentic Irish fare, this is where to go!  The Guinness Beef Stew is fantastic, and you can't go wrong with any of the other traditional dishes like Shepherd's Pie or Fish and Chips.  The bar atmosphere is lively, perfect for a stop after the performance.
27 Columbus Avenue
(617) 482-2255

Other restaurants include Todd English's Bonfire, an upscale grill;

Smith and Wollensky
This fine dining experience is housed in a National Historic Landmark, "The Castle," which used to be the Boston Armory.  Caddy corner from the Park Plaza, this steak house is known for its prime rib and atmosphere.
101 Arlington Street
(617) 423-1112

Flash's
This is a small corner bar with lots of personality.  Their Garlic Fries must be tainted with some highly addictive substance, because your plate is clean before you realize you've eaten them.  The drink list is extensive and adventurous and the desserts are simple but divine.
310 Stuart Street
(617) 574-8888

Davio's
“The hottest, hippest, busiest dining scene in the Hub is Park Square,” wrote the Boston Globe, where this Northern Italian steakhouse is located.  "Packed almost nightly and boasting Saturday night reservations four weeks out,” it features a gorgeous 9,000-square foot restaurant.
