WHAT'S COMING TO THE MAJESTIC?
It is "home" for Opera Boston,
Handel and Haydn Society,
Emerson Stage, FleetBoston Celebrity Series, Boston Early Music
Festival, Boston Gay Men's Chorus, The New England Conservatory Opera Program,
and World Music, among other New England not-for-profit producers and presenters.
Check the calendar for details.
WILL MY SEATS BE GOOD?
The Majestic is a small theater. The
least expensive seat is "at the 30 yard line," and you will see and hear
perfectly. The Majestic was built for opera. It's intimate so you see facial
expressions and people have human proportions, yet the stage lighting makes
people appear "larger than life."
WHAT ABOUT SERVICE CHARGES?
A sale requires customer
service staff to handle the transaction, computers, space rentals, printing,
postage, and overhead. The industry practice is for the ticketing
agency to add those costs to the face value of the ticket.
At the Majestic we have made a special
arrangement with Telecharge that allows producers to either pay for those
costs as part of their cost of doing business, or to pass them on to you
as a per-ticket add-on. This choice is up to the producer, not the
Majestic or Telecharge. Of course we all understand that, whether
bundled into the ticket face price or shows as an extra charge, the cost
of the process remains the same and we consumers pay for our purchases.
When you buy through Telecharge you
will also be given the option of discounted delivery charges when you provide
your e-mail address. Rather than the usual $3.50 per order fee for
mailing you may save $1.50 per order by choosing print-at-home "E-Tickets."
Of course, you may always choose to pick up your tickets at the Majestic
for $1.50 per order.
The convenience of E-tickets is possible
now because our ticketing service, Telecharge, has installed real-time
16-bit content-rich ticket validation systems in the Majestic lobby.
You get through the entrance quicker and errors are caught and fixed before
you get to your seats. These advantages extend to subscriptions purchased
through MAJesTix but aren't available to other subscribers. If your
tickets are imprinted with "Telecharge.com" you automatically received
these benefits.
Regardless of per ticket fees, you
always get the best seats for the money by:
-
Buying early
-
Subscribing
-
Supporting our performers with additional
gifts

ARE YOU AFFILIATED WITH EMERSON COLLEGE?
Absolutely! The Majestic
is owned and operated by Emerson
College, which ensures that its students and our community will benefit
long into the future. Events produced by Emerson Stage and the New
England Conservatory Opera Theater associate student resources with professional
leadership. FMI: Lance Olson,

TELL ME ABOUT EMERSON COLLEGE
Founded in 1880, the Emerson
College community includes over 3,500 students and 500 employees. Its
campus includes 18 historic buildings clustered in the Back Bay and around
The Boston Common and Public Gardens. Its acquisition of four Theatre District
buildings has been a driving force in the revitalization of the District.
The newly renovated Little Building houses over 700 students at the corner
of Boylston and Tremont Streets, who bring energy, enthusiasm and prosperity
to downtown Boston.
Emerson College's 1983 purchase and
subsequent restoration of the theater is the most recent of the string
of "firsts" which contribute to the College's unique identity. Emerson
College is the only independent four year institution in the nation devoted
to the study of communication and the performing arts. It was the first
in New England to establish an educational FM radio station (WERS-FM
in 1949) and the first to run a CCTV facility (WERS-TV in 1953.) The Cutler
Majestic Theatre is the first "Broadway" theater in the country owned by
a college for use by its students. For Emerson College, the Majestic serves
both as a laboratory for students to gain experience in the arts and crafts
of live communication and as a key production facility for the Division
of Performing Arts' Emerson
Stage. This visionary approach continues the College's tradition of
innovation in the communication arts and sciences. FMI: Lance Olson, 617/824-8183.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "HISTORIC LANDMARK?"
The Cutler
Majestic was built in 1903 for opera, one of three facilities Eben
Dyer Jordan commissioned to house his favorite art form. (The others are
Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory, designed for concert opera, and
the 1909 Boston Opera House on Huntington Street, designed for grand opera
but demolished in 1957.) The sound is exceptional, and the view is unobstructed
from all seats because it is the first Boston theater engineered without
pillars and such obstructions to visibility and sound. It's "love" of opera
singers remains evident today as fans of Opera Boston and the New England
Conservatory opera productions know the Emerson is the only theater in
Boston that houses opera productions today.
It was engineered to support sophisticated
stage effects, and was the first in Boston designed for electric light.
We
love restoring its original appearance, but we also take pains to constantly
upgrade technical systems, to 21st century standards.
Its architectural importance earned
the Majestic a place in both the Massachusetts and National Registers of
Historic Places, and status as a Boston Historic Landmark. FMI: Lance Olson,
617/824-8183.
WHERE DOES MY TICKET MONEY GO?
The not-for-profit producers and presenters
who use the Majestic take all the ticket money (except for a restoration
fee) and spend it here in New England. They use it to make more performances,
to take events into our schools, to subsidize tickets for young and disadvantaged
people, to teach people about the arts -- to make our community a better
place to live. They supplement it with gifts from individuals, foundations,
corporations and our government. Opera Boston, for example, gets only 30%
of the cost of its operas from tickets! So your ticket dollars get
"amplified" by donations, then go right back into the New England economy
supporting artists, grocers, dry cleaners, auto mechanics, printers, and
most likely YOU! FMI: Lance Olson,
617/824-8183.
HOW DO I BOOK THE THEATRE FOR AN EVENT?
While the Majestic is very busy, it
is available sometimes for events such as corporate meetings, lectures,
receptions, and private affairs. FMI: Lance
Olson, 617/824-8183.
HOW DO I CHECK LOST & FOUND?
Call 617/824-8000. Items found
at the Majestic are held for two (2) weeks, then donated to the Red Cross
if possible. Please call as soon as possible to see if we found your
item and we will hold it for you past the two week time for you to pick
up.
IS THE MAJESTIC ACCESSIBLE?
The Cutler
Majestic Theatre takes pride from its ability to serve all people.
We are listed in Access Expressed! Massachusetts: A Cultural Resources
Directory. The Majestic is fully accessible to persons using wheel
chairs. Signage, washrooms, entry ways and seating conform to or exceed
ADA standards.
Tickets can
be bought using a TTY device, at 1-888-889-8587. Assistive headsets
are available for no cost at every performance. We welcome employees regardless
of special needs. FMI: Lance Olson, 617/824-8183.
WHAT MAY I BRING INTO THE THEATRE?
Your ticket is a license granting you
specific and limited rights. You do not have the right to carry any
items into the theatre with you. Specifically prohibited are food,
beverages, and luggage. Although it is not our intention to prohibit
small personal items or coats, the management has the right, and the responsibility
under the law, to determine what is or is not appropriate to bring into
the theatre.
