| Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus
in the Underworld
raises the questions that would have occurred to the composer's 1858 audience
of Parisian bon vivants: What if things were not so rosy in the marriage
of Orpheus (the God of Music) and Euridice? What if Euridice was having
an affair with a younger shepherd boy? What if Orpheus was, in fact,
a dreary old pedant of a musician? Suppose Orpheus only goes to Hades
to retrieve the dead Euridice in order to appease Public Opinion?
Out of this satirical take on myth, Offenbach created a delicious musical
confection, including his famous Can-Can. Performed in English with
supertitles.
How many times have you heard
your opera-going friends say, “I heard them back when...” You too can be
the first to hear the stars of tomorrow in a fully staged opera, brought
to life by the up-and-coming young singers who study at New England Conservatory.
NEC singers have consistently gone on to win Metropolitan Opera Regional
Auditions and perform in opera houses around the world. The April production
is conducted by NEC Director and Chair of Opera Studies John Greer and
directed by Tom Diamond, whose productions for Canada’s major opera companies
have been nominated for more than a dozen Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
