| “The four leads and their
uncommon fates—creative and personal—have taken on an emotional embodiment
in movement that expresses our view of the Chekhov work. Retaining
the main philosophical ideas on art that imbue Chekhov’s The Seagull,
we moved the action from a country estate to a ballet hall, where the fashionable
choreographer Trigorin clashes with the daring innovator Treplev, and the
young dancer Zarechnaya competes with prima ballerina Arkadina. The
issues of the development of art, the search for new forms, true and deceptive
values, love and career are expressed with particular sharpness in our
production.
“Although at first glance,
the ballet version of The Seagull differs from the external action
of the literary work, a closer look reveals the imperishable ties between
the ballet’s protagonists and the Chekhov play.” -- Boris Eifman, Choreographer |
Boris Eifman is a philosopher
in choreography. He is excited by mysteries of creation and by the
magic of geniuses. The dances of Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg
are shockingly theatrical, an amalgamation of reality and fantasy.

ABOUT EIFMAN BALLET OF ST. PETERSBURG

This is the company's 8th
US tour and 5th Boston appearance. It last performed at the Majestic in
the American premiere of Anna Karenina. Critic Iris Fanger
of the Patriot Ledger said the following of the May 18, 2005 performance.
| "With Anna Karenina,
however, Eifman has done himself proud by creating a taut, swift-moving
entertainment that owes as much to our Broadway musical stage and the tricks
of Cirque du Soleil as it does to classical ballet technique. His
company of nearly fifty dancers is not only disciplined and well-trained
in ballet but also possessed of the stamina of a gold-medal Olympic team...the
viewer is guaranteed a fast theatrical ride, and an engrossing evening
of Russian-perfumed anguish." --Iris Fanger, Patriot Ledger,

Founded
by Boris Eifman in 1977 as the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater, the EIFMAN
BALLET has revolutionized the concept of classical dance in Russia by taking
the art of ballet to its highest level of expressiveness. Eifman created
a new type of dance artist, dancers/actors, who use the solid foundation
of impeccable classical ballet training as a launching pad for innovative,
modern choreography. The theater's unique style fuses avant-garde dance
with the methods of the 20th century dramatic theater and film, using all
aspects of a theatrical production to create a rich and multi-dimensional
theater experience.
