WGBH’s A Christmas
Celtic Sojourn with Brian O’Donovan is an intimate sharing of Christmas
music, songs, dancing, poetry and stories to warm the winter nights.
Last year the concert received
rave reviews. It played to sold out houses of more than 4,000.
Like all cherished traditions,
this year's celebration includes several beloved performers and a few who
are new.
It features the singing of
Robbie
O’Connell joined by fiddler George Keith and flute player Shannon
Heaton; singer Karan Casey with her band including
Niall
Valelly, Robbie Overson, and Chico Huff; and the three-person
vocal harmony group Navan, who have become a beautiful audio centerpiece
of the Concert.
New this year, the incredibly
talented Mulcahy Family, from Abbeyfeale in County Limerick, have
accepted Brian’s invitation to join in the festivities. Mick Mulcahy
is himself a much respected accordion player from an area of Ireland steeped
in traditional music. His daughters Louise and Michelle are two of
the most talented and diverse traditional instrumentalists in Ireland today.
Their high level virtuosity includes flute, whistle, concertina, harp,
piano, uileann pipes, accordion and of course, fiddle.
Dance director Kieran
Jordan is once again preparing an extravaganza featuring the old and
the new sides of the thriving dance traditions of Ireland and beyond. Fionnuala
O’Donovan and Lindsay O’Donovan will rejoin host
Brian O’Donovan.
"The Cutler Majestic Theatre
is just spectacular and last year succeeded in providing the homey atmosphere
so crucial to what we present,” said O’Donovan recently. "We can’t
wait to be back.”

| The show ... in
its quiet way was dynamic, brisk , and speckled with surprises. In an era
when so much entertainment comes on like Red Bull, this was closer to cocoa
-- or as O'Donovan might put it, the pure drop. -- Scott
